Album Notes & Community Reviews
Despite being heavily credited as absolute foundational architects of the 'Bristol Sound' alongside Massive Attack, Smith & Mighty's debut full-length arrived remarkably late in the era. 'Bass Is Maternal' completely envelops the listener in highly aquatic, intensely dub-reggae-influenced trip-hop, anchored deeply by massive, earth-shaking basslines. It operates as a beautifully nocturnal, deeply atmospheric triumph of UK soundsystem culture.
