Sonny's Crib

Album Notes & Community Reviews

'Sonny's Crib' serves as a definitive hard bop sextet statement, assembling a formidable three-horn front line of Donald Byrd, Curtis Fuller, and a creatively revitalized John Coltrane under the leadership of pianist Sonny Clark. The session is a quintessential Blue Note blowing session, defined by Clark's blues-inflected arrangements and incisive piano work, which create a platform for virtuosic, high-energy improvisations from every member. Recorded just two weeks before the equally iconic 'Blue Train', the album captures a group of master musicians at their peak, cementing a benchmark for the ensemble-driven hard bop sound of the era.
