Sonny Criss Plays Cole Porter

Album Notes & Community Reviews

Focusing his remarkably intense, highly passionate alto saxophone tone entirely on the sophisticated songbook of the legendary Broadway composer, this quartet session is a stunning melodic triumph. Supported by pianist Sonny Clark, the leader eschews blindingly fast bebop tempos to explore the deep emotional core of the classic standards. The elegantly paced, heavily blues-inflected record serves as a brilliant showcase of his profound lyrical maturity.
