Album Notes & Community Reviews

Documenting a legendary residency at the Village Gate, this album captures the saxophone colossus fronting a radical, piano-less quartet featuring Don Cherry and Billy Higgins. Deeply influenced by Ornette Coleman's recent innovations, Rollins stretches his formidable improvisational muscles across massive, sprawling 20-minute rhythmic explorations, pushing hard bop conventions to the absolute brink of free jazz.
