Album Notes & Community Reviews

Marking his impressive debut as a session leader, this 10-inch release introduced Sonny Rollins's muscular, highly articulate tenor saxophone voice to the jazz world. Backed by a rhythm section featuring the Modern Jazz Quartet's John Lewis, Rollins navigates standard bop structures with a remarkably confident, developing thematic logic. The record is a critical first chapter in the career of one of the genre's greatest improvisers.
