Deliberately pivoting away from the heavy grunge sound of their initial successes, the band integrated glam rock, shoegaze, and jangle pop into their repertoire. Recording sessions at a secluded ranch in the Santa Ynez Valley were profoundly impacted by frontman Scott Weiland's escalating battles with addiction. Despite the turbulent production, the resulting eclectic arrangements demonstrated a significant compositional maturation.
