Sleeping Beauty

Album Notes & Community Reviews

Released in 1979, 'Sleeping Beauty' captures Sun Ra and his Arkestra in a notably serene and atmospheric session. The album's three long-form compositions are built on lush, groove-oriented arrangements that prominently feature electric bass and guitar, a continuation of the more accessible, funk-influenced direction explored on contemporaneous albums like 'Lanquidity' and 'On Jupiter'. The Arkestra's performance blends these grounded, soulful rhythms with ethereal woodwind textures, cosmic keyboard work from Ra, and meditative group vocals, creating a uniquely tranquil and hypnotic entry in his extensive discography.
