Conceived after the departure of Alan Rankine, Billy Mackenzie largely handled the intricate arrangements alongside producer Martyn Ware. 'Perhaps' moves away from the chaotic post-punk of their early catalog into polished, heavily synthesized baroque pop, highlighting Mackenzie's astonishing operatic vocal range.
