Album Notes & Community Reviews

Driven by the raw, wildly energetic gospel fervor of its titular two-part single, this debut violently injects the uninhibited atmosphere of a sanctified church service directly into secular rock and roll. The vocal trio abandons the smooth, choreographed stylings of contemporary doo-wop in favor of frenzied call-and-response shouts and relentless, driving rhythms. The record fundamentally anticipated the raucous development of soul music in the following decade.
