The project explicitly codified the fusion of classical music and modern jazz by featuring the Beaux Arts String Quartet alongside the Jimmy Giuffre Three. Gunther Schuller contributed conducting and arranging duties, attempting to formally bridge the gap between composed chamber music and spontaneous improvisation.
