The Modern Jazz Sextet

Album Notes & Community Reviews

Assembling a staggering array of modern jazz heavyweights, including Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Stitt, and John Lewis, this session is a masterclass in relaxed, highly conversational group interplay. Despite the immense star power, the musicians largely avoid aggressive cutting contests, focusing instead on incredibly tasteful, deeply swinging collective improvisation. The flawlessly executed, highly sophisticated date stands as a magnificent, ego-free summit of mid-century instrumental giants.
