Recorded at the historic Sam Phillips Sound Studio in Memphis just prior to the pandemic lockdowns, John Darnielle's long-running outfit leans deeply into warm, Southern soul and country rock. The rich studio environment profoundly impacted the arrangements, resulting in prominent Hammond B3 organ flourishes and a remarkably loose, live-in-the-room energy. It stands as a vibrant counterpoint to their lo-fi, boombox-recorded album released earlier in the same year.
