Moving away from the strictly autobiographical narratives of his mid-2000s output, John Darnielle returns to highly varied, character-driven storytelling on his thirteenth studio album. Featuring vibrant, full-band arrangements complete with string sections and brass, the lyrics focus heavily on social outcasts, B-movie actors, and mythical monsters. The record served as a wonderfully eclectic, upbeat palate cleanser for the acclaimed folk-rock act.
