John Darnielle initially conceptualized this record as a rock opera revolving around a besieged seaside community and the aesthetics of tabletop role-playing games. While those themes remain, the project evolved to include reflections on aging rock stars and personal burnout. The instrumentation is surprisingly lush, featuring prominent string arrangements and a polished folk-rock production that contrasts with their historically lo-fi sound.
