Songs for Pierre Chuvin
by The Mountain Goats
Driven by the sudden onset of pandemic lockdowns, John Darnielle returned to his iconic Panasonic boombox, recording an entire album exactly as he did in the 1990s. Thematically, the cassette-hiss-laden acoustic tracks explore the fall of the Roman Empire and pagan resistance against early Christianity, inspired by a book by historian Pierre Chuvin. The impromptu project served as a nostalgic, vital lifeline for both the band and its dedicated fanbase.
