Album Notes & Community Reviews
'Monk's Blues' presents Thelonious Monk compositions in arranged big-band settings by Oliver Nelson. The album reflects Columbia's interest in placing Monk within more polished orchestral jazz formats late in his recording career. Its reception has often centered on the contrast between Monk's angular piano language and the smoother ensemble writing around it.
