Eschewing modern synthesizers and drum machines entirely, Todd Rundgren ambitiously recorded this lush, blue-eyed soul album live-in-the-studio with an enormous ensemble of musicians and background vocalists. 'Nearly Human' recalls the dense, orchestral R&B production of the 1970s while addressing themes of spiritual longing and existential yearning. It was critically praised as a remarkably organic and passionate return to form.
