Frustrated by label pressures and ongoing contractual disputes, the maverick producer and multi-instrumentalist delivered an intentionally sarcastic, highly commercial pop record. 'The Ever Popular Tortured Artist Effect' ironically embraces slick synthesizers, drum machines, and catchy, accessible new wave melodies while explicitly mocking the music industry within its lyrical themes. Despite the cynical genesis of the project, the incredibly infectious novelty hit 'Bang the Drum All Day' became one of the most enduring successes of his solo career.
