Originally self-released on cassette after being recorded entirely on a digital voice recorder, Merrill Garbus's debut is a wildly inventive, proudly lo-fi explosion of freak-folk. The music is constructed around live, looping drum rhythms, ukulele strumming, and her incredibly powerful, elastic vocal acrobatics. The record's raw, unpolished energy caught the attention of 4AD, launching her career as a singular voice in indie pop.
