Merrill Garbus expanded her frenetic, loop-pedal approach by enlisting outside producers for the first time, including John Hill and Malay. The deeply eclectic instrumentation relies on synthetic drum machines, syncopated basslines, and layered vocal acrobatics influenced heavily by Haitian dance rhythms and 1990s R&B. It achieved widespread critical acclaim for its chaotic, fiercely independent pop sensibilities.
