Bastard

Album Notes & Community Reviews

Tyler, The Creator's debut mixtape, 'Bastard', is framed as a therapy session with the fictional Dr. TC, establishing a narrative structure that would continue on subsequent albums. The self-produced, lo-fi sound, crafted using software like FL Studio, combines eerie piano loops, distorted synths, and minimalist drums, creating a raw, horrorcore atmosphere. Lyrically, the album is defined by its transgressive and confrontational content, exploring themes of alienation, anger, and violence with a dark, witty, and often shocking approach that garnered both critical acclaim and significant controversy. This free, self-released project was pivotal in launching both Tyler's career and the Odd Future collective into the public eye through internet notoriety.
