Album Notes & Community Reviews
Ulver's debut, 'Bergtatt: Et eeventyr i 5 capitler', pioneered a blend of raw second-wave black metal and Norwegian folk traditions, contrasting harsh, distorted guitars and shrieked vocals with clean, chanted singing and extended acoustic passages featuring flute. The album's production cultivates a mysterious and melancholic atmosphere, complementing archaic Dano-Norwegian lyrics inspired by Scandinavian folktales rather than the anti-Christian themes common among their contemporaries. This narrative focus on folklore, combined with its dynamic shifts between atmospheric aggression and tranquil melody, established the album as a landmark work of folk-infused black metal.
