Following a dramatic lineup restructuring that introduced vocalist Peter Goalby, the veteran British ensemble continued their aggressive pursuit of the lucrative American arena rock market. 'Head First' largely suppresses their signature heavy Hammond organ sound in favor of highly polished, guitar-driven anthems and slick pop-metal choruses. Although the commercially focused record alienated early progressive fans, it maintained their relevance in the shifting heavy rock landscape of the era.
