Album Notes & Community Reviews
A monumental, 4-disc masterwork, 'Ten Freedom Summers' is a profound meditation on the American Civil Rights Movement. A finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, the work merges Smith's Golden Quartet with a classical chamber orchestra, creating a powerful form of 'black classical music.' The music is narrative and evocative, using the language of the avant-garde to create poignant and powerful portraits of key historical figures and events, cementing Smith's status as a major American composer.
