Drums and Wires

Album Notes & Community Reviews

On 'Drums and Wires', XTC pivoted from quirky art-pop to a more focused and accessible new wave sound, defined by the introduction of guitarist Dave Gregory and the resulting interplay of dual, angular guitars. The album's sonic character is marked by the powerful, expansive drum sound crafted by producer Steve Lillywhite and engineer Hugh Padgham, an early showcase of their signature gated reverb technique. This taut musical backing supports lyrical themes of modern-world anxieties and submission to external forces, a combination that yielded the commercial breakthrough 'Making Plans for Nigel' and solidified the record as a post-punk landmark.
