Biography
Brooklyn-born composer and performer Charlemagne Palestine has made intense, ritualistic music since the 1960s, first as carillonneur of St Thomas Episcopal Church in Manhattan and then with the long piano works he calls strummings. 'Strumming Music' from 1974 remains his signature piece, building two alternating notes into clouds of overtones. A contemporary of the New York minimalists who calls himself a maximalist, he now lives in Brussels and still performs worldwide.
