Biography

Claudio Monteverdi (1567–1643) was an Italian composer from Cremona whose madrigals, sacred music and operas carried music from the Renaissance into the Baroque. At the Gonzaga court in Mantua he wrote 'L'Orfeo' (1607), the earliest surviving opera in the repertoire; as maestro di cappella at St Mark's in Venice he crowned his career with 'L'incoronazione di Poppea' (1643). His 'Vespro della Beata Vergine' of 1610 is another cornerstone of the repertoire.
