Biography

The Contortions were an American no wave band formed in New York City in 1977 by saxophonist and singer James Chance, with guitarists Jody Harris and Pat Place, bassist George Scott III, keyboardist Adele Bertei and drummer Don Christensen. The band fused free jazz, funk and punk, and Chance's confrontational stage act became notorious. Their first recordings were four tracks on the 1978 compilation 'No New York', produced by *Brian Eno* and documenting the city's no wave scene. In 1979 they released their only studio album, 'Buy', on #ZE Records#, while the same musicians also recorded 'Off White' as *James White and the Blacks*. The Contortions broke up that autumn. Chance died in New York City on 18 June 2024.
