Dan Penn

Biography

Dan Penn is a Muscle Shoals and Memphis songwriter whose songs became Southern soul standards, among them 'The Dark End of the Street' and 'Do Right Woman, Do Right Man'. A fine blue-eyed soul singer and guitarist in his own right, he preferred the writer's room and the producer's chair, shaping hits for *James Carr*, *Aretha Franklin* and *The Box Tops* with partners *Chips Moman* and *Spooner Oldham*. His sparse solo catalogue, from 'Nobody's Fool' to 'Living on Mercy', is prized by soul devotees.
