Biography

Franz Schubert (1797 to 1828) was an Austrian composer from Vienna who bridged the Classical and Romantic eras. In a career cut short at thirty-one he wrote over six hundred Lieder, including 'Erlk枚nig' and the cycles 'Die sch枚ne M眉llerin' and 'Winterreise', alongside seven complete symphonies, the 'Trout' Quintet, the 'Death and the Maiden' Quartet, sacred music, operas and major piano works. Little known beyond a circle of Viennese admirers in his lifetime, he was championed after his death by *Robert Schumann*, *Felix Mendelssohn* and *Franz Liszt*, and now stands among the most performed composers in the classical repertoire.
