A trombonist, composer, and arranger, Fred Wesley stands as a principal architect of the funk language. As musical director for James Brown, he orchestrated the sophisticated horn arrangements of The J.B.'s, defining their sound with surgically precise solos and sinuous grooves on seminal recordings.
