Biography
Giuseppe Verdi (1813–1901) was an Italian opera composer from Le Roncole, near Busseto. From the breakthrough of 'Nabucco' through the mature masterpieces 'Rigoletto', 'Il trovatore', 'La traviata' and 'Aida', to the late Shakespearean pair 'Otello' and 'Falstaff', his operas defined the nineteenth-century stage and remain the core of the repertoire. His Requiem of 1874 stands among the great choral works, and he died in Milan in 1901, mourned as a national figure.
