Biography

Hildegard von Bingen was a German Benedictine abbess, mystic, and polymath of the High Middle Ages, revered as one of the most significant composers of sacred monophony. Known as the 'Sibyl of the Rhine', her compositions were born from divine visions she experienced since childhood. Her musical works, collected in the 'Symphonia armoniae celestium revelationum', are characterized by soaring, expressive melodies that pushed the boundaries of traditional Gregorian chant. She also created 'Ordo Virtutum', arguably the earliest surviving morality play. Though her work was obscure for centuries, it was rediscovered in the 20th century, with ensembles like *Sequentia* bringing her visionary music to modern audiences.
