Biography
Joe Harriott was a Jamaican-born alto saxophonist and composer who became a towering figure in the British jazz scene. After moving to the UK in 1951, he evolved from a gifted bebop player into a revolutionary pioneer of free-form jazz, developing his concepts independently of American innovator *Ornette Coleman*. His seminal albums with his quintet, including 'Free Form' and 'Abstract' released on #Jazzland# and #Columbia# respectively, showcased a unique approach that often retained melodic and rhythmic anchors amidst collective improvisation. Later, he broke new ground by collaborating with composer *John Mayer* on the Indo-Jazz Fusions project, masterfully blending jazz with Indian classical music on albums like 'Indo-Jazz Suite'.
