Biography
Louis Jordan and His Tympany Five, formed in Harlem in 1938, were the leading jump blues band of the 1940s. Saxophonist and singer Louis Jordan led a small, sharp sextet whose #Decca Records# hits, including 'Caldonia', 'Choo Choo Ch'Boogie' and 'Saturday Night Fish Fry', laid groundwork for rhythm and blues and rock and roll. The band's name, personnel and size shifted constantly, but Jordan's alto saxophone and comic timing never did, until he replaced the group with a big band in 1951.
