Maria del Mar Bonet

Biography

Maria del Mar Bonet, born in Palma, Mallorca in 1947, is a Catalan singer and songwriter and a leading figure of the Nova Cançó movement. Singing with the *Els Setze Jutges* collective from 1967, she defied the Franco regime's suppression of Catalan, and after her song 'Què volen aquesta gent?' was banned she carried her music across Europe. Rooted in the traditional song of Mallorca on albums such as 'Alenar' (1977), she later explored the wider Mediterranean on 'Anells d'aigua' (1985) and 'Ultramar' (2017), sustaining a career of six decades.
