Biography
Professor Longhair (Henry Roeland Byrd, 1918–1980) was the New Orleans pianist whose rumba-boogie piano style and records like 'Tipitina' and 'Mardi Gras in New Orleans' founded the city's rhythm and blues tradition. Rediscovered in the 1970s after years of obscurity, he became the spiritual father of New Orleans piano, influencing *Dr. John*, *Fats Domino*, and generations after. The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival was effectively founded around his comeback, and his portrait now watches over its piano tradition.
