Biography
Formed in London in 1976, This Heat charted a volatile course between the ascendant punk scene and avant-garde experimentation. The trio of Charles Bullen, Charles Hayward, and Gareth Williams defined a new musical language by merging confrontational rock with intensive studio manipulation, treating their Cold Storage studio as a primary instrument. They pioneered the use of tape loops and musique concrète within a rock framework, creating dense, politically charged soundscapes that were rhythmically complex yet structurally unpredictable. While their output was sparse—two albums and an EP—the group's radical approach to sound and composition established a vital precedent for post-punk, industrial, and noise-rock.
