Conceived primarily to introduce the American market to the band's extensive backlog of UK-only releases, 'Living in the Past' is a sprawling double-album curation of singles, B-sides, and rare EP tracks. Ian Anderson's distinctive flute playing and eccentric, medieval-tinged songwriting anchor a fascinating evolution from gritty blues-rock into wildly ambitious progressive-folk. Because so much of the material was never featured on their proper studio albums, it functions as a critical, standalone piece of their classic-era discography.
