Album Notes & Community Reviews

Released by Chess Records to capitalize on the burgeoning folk-blues revival, this compilation gathers some of John Lee Hooker's earliest and most hypnotic Detroit recordings from the early 1950s. The tracks heavily feature his signature, stomping solo performances, prioritizing raw, deeply rhythmic guitar boogie over traditional 12-bar blues structures. It remains a vital document of the unfiltered, electric intensity that defined his initial rise to prominence.
