Songs

Album Notes & Community Reviews

Acting as John Maus's official debut, 'Songs' compiles half a decade of eccentric, lo-fi synthesizer recordings created on rudimentary equipment while he studied philosophy. The deeply peculiar tracks pair intensely emotional, reverb-drenched baritone vocals with cheap, driving synth-pop backing tracks reminiscent of 1980s television scores. The project laid vital foundational aesthetics for the emerging hypnagogic pop movement of the late 2000s.
