Album Notes & Community Reviews
Columbia's Legacy division assembled these twenty recordings from Bogan's 1933 to 1935 sessions for the Banner, ARC and Vocalion budget labels, where she was usually billed as Bessie Jackson and accompanied by pianist Walter Roland, with guitarist Josh White appearing on 'Barbecue Bess' and 'Man Stealer Blues'. The set preserves both takes of 'Shave 'Em Dry', including the explicit alternate take recorded in 1935 as a private performance, from a singer whose 1923 'Pawn Shop Blues' session in Atlanta was the first time a Black blues singer was recorded outside New York or Chicago.
