Commissioned by choreographer Maurice Béjart, this bizarre and highly influential ballet score violently collides the academic avant-garde with 1960s pop culture. Electroacoustic pioneer Pierre Henry partnered with pop arranger Michel Colombier to fuse grating tape loops and synthesizer noise with driving psychedelic rock and 'jerk' rhythms. The iconic track 'Psyché Rock' remains a staple of retro-futuristic French pop, heavily sampled and celebrated in modern electronic music.
