Album Notes & Community Reviews

Hastily assembled by Keen Records immediately following the soul pioneer's highly publicized defection to RCA Victor, this compilation gathers various unreleased tracks and singles from his incredibly successful late-1950s period. While clearly a label cash-in, the collection beautifully highlights the pristine, remarkably smooth vocal phrasing that allowed him to effortlessly bridge profound gospel intensity with sophisticated, massive mainstream pop crossover appeal.
