CMYK EP

by James Blake

CMYK EP cover art

Masterfully recontextualizing 1990s R&B vocals, particularly prominent samples of Aaliyah and Kelis, this project stands as a monumental pillar of the post-dubstep movement. The producer strips away the aggressive bass drops of contemporary club music in favor of delicate, heavily syncopated percussion and warm, swelling synthesizer chords. It firmly established his reputation as an innovative sound designer just prior to his pivot toward traditional singer-songwriter structures.
