Acholi Music

Acholi Music

Acholi music is the music of the Acholi people of northern Uganda and South Sudan: communal dance-song traditions, the royal bwola, the courtship larakaraka, otole war dances and dingi-dingi, performed with drums, calabashes, the nanga seven-string harp, lukeme thumb piano and endingidi fiddle, in call-and-response singing. Its best-known modern bearer is *Geoffrey Oryema*, whose exile albums "Exile" (1990) and "Beat the Border" (1993) carried Acholi language and melody to the world-music audience, while *Bosmic Otim* made the style a vehicle of peace advocacy inside Uganda.
