Akan Music

Akan music is the traditional music of the Akan peoples of Ghana and C么te d'Ivoire, among the most thoroughly documented repertories in African ethnomusicology. Its centre is drumming: the atumpan 'talking drums' that reproduce the contours of the tonal Twi language, the kete court ensembles of the Asantehene, and the great fontomfrom batteries played for chiefs and state occasions. Around the drums stand adowa and kete dances, praise singing, funeral music and the seperewa harp-lute tradition, carried into modern guitar styles by masters such as *Koo Nimo*.
