American Primitivism

American Primitivism

Originating from the work of guitarist *John Fahey* in the late 1950s, American Primitivism is a solo instrumental style rooted in the steel-string acoustic guitar. The genre synthesizes the structures of pre-war country blues and Appalachian folk with dissonant, avant-garde sensibilities and non-Western modal concepts. It is defined by complex fingerpicking, alternate tunings, and lengthy, episodic compositions that create a uniquely American form of pastoral modernism. Despite its academic name, the music's ethos is deeply personal and idiosyncratic, existing almost entirely outside of commercial trends and favoring a self-published, archivist-minded approach to recording and distribution.
