Anatolian Rock

Anatolian Rock

Anatolian Rock emerged in the mid-1960s, synthesizing Western rock forms with Turkish folk music traditions. The genre is defined by the integration of traditional stringed instruments like the saz and ba臒lama with amplified, often fuzzed-out, electric guitars, bass, and modern drum kits. Its sonic signature merges microtonal scales (makam) and syncopated folk rhythms with the drive of rock and the exploratory ethos of psychedelia. Artists such as *Erkin Koray* and *Cem Karaca* moved from reinterpreting folk standards to original compositions, often with socially conscious themes. The genre's momentum was curtailed by the 1980 military coup, yet its influence persists in contemporary psychedelic and global music scenes.
