Ancient Greek Music

Ancient Greek music is the modern reconstruction movement that performs the music of classical antiquity on replica instruments — the aulos double reed, kithara, lyra and frame drums — from the few dozen surviving notated fragments, including the Delphic hymns and the Seikilos epitaph. Beginning with mid-20th-century scholars and given its landmark recordings by *Gregorio Paniagua*'s "Musique de la Grèce antique" (1979) and *Petros Tabouris*, it sits between musicology and performance: rhythms follow poetic meter, modes follow ancient theory, and every recording is partly an argument about how the ancient world sounded.
